Many jewellers create and design their own jewellery. By using their own designs or the designs created by other designers or even their customers, jewellers start by twisting the metal, for example silver or gold, or by carving wax to develop a model for forming the metal into the piece of jewelry. The jeweller then solders the metal parts ttogether, and then can choose to mount a gemstone or a diamond into the metal or could even engrave the metal creating a design. Others jewelers are more involved in "finishing" tasks, for example, stone setting, engraving, or polishing. Common repair tasks include sizing rings- making them larger or smaller, resetting gemstones, or replacing broken mountings and clasps on necklaces, bracelets, and rings.
Jewelers who work in larger manufacturing houses will often specialize in one particular part of jewelry making. Model or mold makers are tasked with creating tools or models representing the jewelry that will be created. Jewelry assemblers will typically fuse or solder together jewelry parts. They might also be involved in setting the gemstones or diamonds. Jewelry engravers will carve designs in the metal using special tools, while polishers help make the finished piece even more lustrous.
While jewelers usually do the hand craftsmanship that it takes to create a new piece of jewelry, gemologists and laboratory graders on the other hand, will describe, analyze, and certify the gemstones characteristics and quality. Gemologists sometimes work inside a gemological lab or sometimes as quality contro for retail stores, importers/exporters, or manufacturing operations. Gemologists use microscopes, computerized tools, and grading instruments to look closely at gemstones or entire pieces of jewelry. They will then write reports that certify that the jewelry piece is of a specific quality. Some jewelers will also study gemology so that they become more familiar with the properties of the gemstones they work with every day.
